Proximity can help even in the shoe manufacturing business. Just
finished reading an article in last week's Time about New Balance
shoes; they still make about 25% of their product in the US (New
England region and California). Whilst more expensive to make in
wages, the actual labor is significantly less due to the use of lean
production techniques, and the ability to turn around orders quickly
plays a decisive role in supplying retailers.
