Something similar used to happen on Victorian mill engines if the
governor broke; apparently they would speed up until the flywheel
detached itself from the rest of the machinery and rolled off through
the mill wall; as it weighed 20-30 tons the wise person did not get in
its way. Later engines had a second emergency governor to avoid this
predicament.
