I'm fascinated with this strand since I once witnessed a runaway
engine.Itwas feeding from the sump we concluded as someone here
suggested, and it was
a truly terrifying sight, the engine accelerating on itself to the point
that it threatened to totally disintegrate. The crisis was brought to an end
by a (mad) friend who ran into the shed where the engine was housed and
somehow succeeded in stopping it by means I never discovered.
It must have frightened me because subsequently I formulated a mental
emergency procedure for what I'd do if similar should ever happen to the JP3
- an engine, remember, governed by a single, frail regulator spring. The
emergency drill starts with manual adjustment and finishes with a
last-resort attempt to asphixiate the engine by screwing the exhauist cap
back onto it! Somehow I don't think the last would work if it was really
steaming!
