Where is the need for some of the massive engines fitted in present
day narrowboats, and 9hp for a bow thruster!. Chris.KP

Quite simple Chris, my 75hp engine and 9hp bow thruster *aren't
fitted in a narrow boat at all*. They're fitted in a 27 ton, 15m x
4.1m, wide beam boat that I have in France. There the weight of the
boat and the, sometimes, lively river sections of, for example, the
Canal du Nivernais (canalised River Yonne) make it useful to have a
powerful bow thruster. (On my narrow boat in the UK I have a 0hp bow
thruster........ie, I haven't got one, unless you count my wife with
the boat pole ;-))
Also, having the bow thruster can be very useful for squeezing into
the few, very tight, spaces that can be left for you in, for
example, the Port de Plaisance in Auxerre. It's really satisfying to
be able to ferry glide across the river and then, with the help of
the bow thruster go virtually sideways into a space between two
(very, very expensive Lynssen boats) and watch as their owners come
racing out to protect their investment only to stand and watch as
you bring 27 tons of steel sideways into the gap between their pride
and joys ;-)
