So Barry, what happens when I turn up at the lock single-handed, following
but unnoticed by you?

It means I have to close an additional gate before I can even start the lock
operation. And since the rules are that you leave the paddles down and the
gates closed when you leave a lock, it means I have to do extra work.

The fact is until it is altered, the rule is clear. Close ALL the gates when
you leave. Not doing it as a singlehander is frankly bad practice that will
get all us single handers a bad name.

What the boatmen did or didn't do a hundred years ago is neither here not
there.
