No, it doesn't. It causes your crew a *little* extra work, while
saving a lot for the single-hander you are following. And anyway, you
can recoup that work by leaving the gates open when *you* depart from
that lock. Irritation all gone!

There is much more back pumping now than at any time in history.

That's irrelevant. Hose pipe bans apply to the use of domestic (i.e.
treated potable) water, which is not sourced from waterway supplies.

Yes, that was the tale being told. But if you look at the actual
effect of shutting gates behind you, you will see it saves relatively
little water in practice.

I think that the reason it was introduced was to allow BWB (as it then
was) unwisely to defer maintenance, something boaters today should not
condone.

So, no reasons against leaving them open, and no reasons for closing
them. Good argument for changing the rule, methinks.

Hmm. So it doesn't matter if a rule is bad, so long as it is clear?
Interesting logic.

>The fact is until it is altered, the rule is clear.

I suspect that the only way to get it officially altered is to show
that increasing numbers of boaters don't support it and are unwilling
to follow it. Which appears to be the case.

It is a bad rule. More and more people are realising it. Once they
start ignoring it, they find their boating is more pleasant as a
result, so they keep ignoring it.

Eventually we will reach the tipping point. The sooner the better
IMHO.

Leave 'em open!
