Well said Steve. IMO too many people feel that rules apply to other
people and not to themselves. As an illustration of that see all the
people who overstay, moor on lock landings, moor on water points,
don't display a boat name, don't display a reg. no., don't have a
licence etc, etc. It's the "I'm all right Jack" attitude in action.
In Barry's case, if I were following a single hander (as we have
done down Tardebigge) and he/she asks us if we mind closing the
gate/s behind them, then with our agreement that is perfectly OK as
we have accepted the extra work involved to allow them to get ahead,
and hence allow us a quicker following passage than would otherwise
occur. When they leave them open without our agreement, then that is
very irritating and causes the following boat crew significant extra
work.
