Fascinating as this thread is, I cannot help thinking that any newcomer
happening on this site would be scared to death and never go near a canal again!
We need to encourage new boaters and hirers (yes even Canaltimers!) as
without them the system will not survive. There will always be risks but these
can be minimized by having simple rules that everyone can understand and put in
to practice
The finer points of lock operation and etiquette and historical practices
will always be over the heads of most people using the canals today.
