One way to look at it but I like to see the public making
a contribution too. At the BW AGM I was surprised to hear
that there were 300 million individual visits by boaters,
anglers, cyclists, etc each year to BW waterways and the
cost of vegetation management along is £3.7 million. Seems
to me there is an opportunity there to set up a membership
scheme for waterways enthusiasts to make a contribution to
at least the cost of towpath upkeep. One percent of 300
million at a £1 a head is £3 million...
There is a new thread on uk.rec.waterways that might offer
a way to set up such a membership scheme.
