Probably not a virus, just carp software. Change to Firefox. All of my family plus I had problems like this and independently decided to change. It takes about ten minutes. If you have a need to use MSIE (in my case to get a reasonable interface to MS Sh**epoint), there is an add-in to Firefox which does a good job of imitating it (IETab). If you're still convinced you have a virus, Zonealarm is good and has a free version, but make sure you uninstall AVG fully first. Checkers tend to interact with each other in mysterious ways.
