It doesn't sound like a virus. No need to buy the "full version" of AVG
- it doesn't do a better job of detecting viruses, but has some
additional functions than you can get free equivalents from other
sources.

A good start for you (and anyone who is worried that their anti-virus
program may have let something in) is to scan your computer online at
Trend Micro's PC_cillin site -
http://housecall.antivirus.com/us/index.html
This takes a while and may have long periods with nothing apparently
happening but it is good. Even if it doesn't find what is causing your
problem it will probably pick up a few things that AVG regarded as low
risk. If nothing else, it will put your mind at rest.

The next thing you could do is to check for spyware and adware. The
following have all been highly recommended, and unlike anti-virus
programs, you can have more than one installed at a time:
Spybot Search and Destroy - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/
AdAware - http://www.lavasoft.com/
Spyware Blaster - http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

I had trouble with Firefox freezing a while ago and I found that I was
using too many add-ons and some of them were conflicting, so I turned
them all off (at which point the problems I had been having stopped)
then I turned just some of them back on, with no further problem. I
don't know whether you have added any additional features to IE7 but if
you have it may be worth turning them off and seeing what happens then.
