My first post so go easy, although I know that this is not Canalworld!!
Whilst I recognise that every little thing has an effect at the margin,
my extensive experience of the licensed trade both as a 'user', regional
manager and pub owner is not the smoking ban ( as this on the whole has
had a positive effect) but the sale, often as loss leaders, of
'excellent ales to be drunk at home' as well as wine and spirits at less
than cost. This coupled to the booze and fags runs to Dieppe and Calais
brings far greater pressures. Without doubt rent/lease costs are also
important as often costs double virtually overnight in response to even
marginal rises in takings as Pubcos seek to maximise income in the short
term.
