I'm told it's the commonest reason for an RCR call out. Our cables  
have done 7000 hours apiece. It seems to be like drive belts, there's  
no fixed schedule for replacement, and it's even harder to check for  
wear.

I reckon all you can do is carry spares, and maybe change old cables  
before critical expeditions like the Bristol Channel.
