I'm told it's the commonest reason for an RCR call out. Our cables
have done 7000 hours apiece. It seems to be like drive belts, there's
no fixed schedule for replacement, and it's even harder to check for
wear.
I reckon all you can do is carry spares, and maybe change old cables
before critical expeditions like the Bristol Channel.

I've only had one cable break, but I have had two control boxes fail.
The cables are fairly indestructable as long as there are no sharp bends
close to either end. I suspect when people change broken cables they
might get a cable than isn't the ideal length (sods law - chandlers never
seem to carry the exact size you need in stock).
