I've only had one cable break, but I have had two control boxes fail.

The cables are fairly indestructable as long as there are no sharp bends
close to either end. I suspect when people change broken cables they
might get a cable than isn't the ideal length (sods law - chandlers never
seem to carry the exact size you need in stock).

There's a section in the FAQs about cables, etc, on the Teleflex (Owners of
Morse) via http://tinyurl.com/morsecables

Also note that there is more than one grade (and make!)

When we had the cruiser, the throttle cable had a fairly tight radius at the
outboard end - not helped by the engine turning! When I used "normal duty"
"pattern" cables, they would last about 1 years before cracking up at the
point where the stiff section joined to the flexible part. If I hunted down
(and they can take some finding) heavy duty, genuine Morse (chandlers in
Brightlingsea - so a bit more expensive than an inland chandlers!) - then
they would last many years. The Morse ones are made in the USA - they were
always in feet (I used 8ft ones) - whereas all the others were metric (i.e.
2.75m).
