Good point. I like the idea of having an external 48 V ATX supply for
the following reasons:
* It removes the large 48VDC-12VDC converter from our board, making it
more reliable and maintainable.
We would have to have connectors on the board for 48V in and the ATX
connector out, so it can be just as well off the board.
* Since we have two Roach Boards in close proximity, could we power
them both from one larger ATX supply?

There are telecoms 48V ATX power supplies commercially available. Just check
the minimum current requirements for regulation (some don't regulate very well
at low current consumption). ROACH has load resistors that are switched-in at
boot time to add a bit of a load to help with this until the devices are
programmed and running. But even so, it's worth keeping an eye on it.
