In my stern lazarette I made a 5/8 inch plywood center floor panel with legs to raise it even with the sides. All the water drains to the lower area. Panel stays dry. Even though everything stowed there doesn't need to be kept dry it is dry. I also grooved the plywood panel to accept edges of my 2 anchors. They don't move or rattle. In the starboard side I have a plastic container (drain holes in the bottom) with coiled plastic line for the lifesaver donut, which hangs on the starboard side stern stanchion. Although, here's a related mystery: my port lazerette cockpit locker, where I store cleaning supplies and assorted gear, almost always has a few inches of gunky liquid at the bottom. By "gunky" I mean dark colored, sometimes almost black, and it tends to be slimy. When I first noticed it, I suspected one of the cleaning products had leaked, but that was not the case. Since this is the same locker that houses my batteries, which sit in a separate well at the front of the locker, I next suspected a battery leak. But that was not it. I dabbed my finger in it and it tastes salty, which suggests it's sea water and not a collection of rainwater. I've checked all the hoses and apertures that pass through the locker and can find no leaks. Every now and then I clean out the locker and mop it up with a big sponge, but if I let it go to long it gets really gooey. The volume of liquid has never amounted to much, but it's a nuisance.
