My 83 Cat 27 has a 5411 engine with a Hurth transmission that I changed the fluid in this spring. The manual says the fluid level should be between the 2 marks and of course I just have one ring and am presuming that if it is equal to the line then I should be ok. I put in exactly the amount they specified of Dextron transmission fluid but don't like guessing about the proper level of fluid. Any opinions? Oh I also checked the level by pushing the dip stick in until it touched the threads and did not screw it in as I read the correct procedure is. Sure is tough to see the level on the stick even with my reading glasses. Seems everytime I crawl into that port locker to check things like the transmission I end up having to rest my 58 year old back for a couple of days in bed because of the cramped stretching involved and swearing to lose at least 15 pounds. Knowing what the level should be would really help my peace of mind and ease the L5-S1 bone fusion abuse I regularly inflict. By the way I used the black trash bag technique discussed by one of the members to drain the transmission fluid and it worked like a champ. Thanks for any help. Russ
