Someone didn't drill drain holes under the lazarette cover did they ? Or does
the
coaming pocket above the lazarette drain to the locker ????

Ah, OK. On my boat (1989) the cockpit drains directly through the stern
via hoses.
Although, here's a related mystery: my port lazerette cockpit locker,
where I store cleaning supplies and assorted gear, almost always has a few
inches of gunky liquid at the bottom. By "gunky" I mean dark colored, sometimes
almost black, and it tends to be slimy. When I first noticed it, I suspected
one of the cleaning products had leaked, but that was not the case. Since this
is the same locker that houses my batteries, which sit in a separate well at
the front of the locker, I next suspected a battery leak. But that was not it.
I dabbed my finger in it and it tastes salty, which suggests it's sea water and
not a collection of rainwater. I've checked all the hoses and apertures that
pass through the locker and can find no leaks. Every now and then I clean out
the locker and mop it up with a big sponge, but if I let it go to long it gets
really gooey. The volume of liquid has never amounted to much, but it's a
nuisance. Any thoughts?

A wet locker in general is where one hangs their foul weather gear when
wet. On the C27 it is the hanging locker to port.
