Talk to the factory about a "trade-in". I went through the same thing a few
years ago. Even though both units were dead, they offered a "trade-in" to
keep the business. I couldn't buy anything anywhere else for the trade-in
price they offered. I would suggest you replace both speed and depth (and
transducer) at the same time.

Subject: catalina27-talk: Dead Signet Depth Sounder

My '89 came with those big round Signet knot/log and depth gauges. The
depth sounder (SL172) is, I'm afraid, dead. I opened it up and there was
that smell of charred electronics and some burnt parts on the circuit board.
Now I need a depth sounder. The replacement unit from Signet is over $400
(without the sender). That seems expensive to me, given that a sounder plus
transducer can be bought for less than half of that. It's just that I have
that big (4 inch?) hole in the bulkhead to deal with. Has anyone come up
with a good (and inexpensive) solution to a replacement unit? Are
transducers interchangeable, or do I need to find one that fits the same
through-hull hole? If I need a new transducer, can that be changed in the
water (without too much drama)? What other questions do I need answered?
(Left myself wide open there, didn't I?)
