Or you could get an autopilot. My Autohelm has a feature of if you depress both the +-1 and +-10 buttons on the same side simultaneously, it tacks 90 degrees. Also working from the front I do that, bump it up or down one or two 10s to fit conditions, and then work the sheets. Another tip is it it much easier to steer when backing up if you get in front (cabin side) of the wheel.

It's all a matter of technique. First, get used to steering from in front of the wheel. When you tack, go around the wheel on the low side and steer from the front. Turn the wheel. With a little practice, you will learn about how much it will take. When the headsail luffs, release the sheet. The bow will pass through the wind and you can start pulling in the new sheet. Reach back and center the wheel. Winch in the sail while continuing to steer from the front. When the sail looks good, usually about 3-4 inches off the spreader, go back around the wheel on the low side. You might use a little friction on the wheel until you get the hang of it. Not really hard at all. Don, #6293, Niceville, FL

I am looking for an easy solution to single hand my 27. I am outfitted with a wheel which I love but it creates a problem in getting to the jib winches that are forward of the wheel. Every time I tack, I have to fight to get past the wheel to winch in the jib. I was thinking about moving the winches back so that I can get to them easily but I does not look like there is enough surface to mount them with out making some sort of bracket. Has anyone ever done this or created any kind of alternative system to haul in the Jib from the back of the cockpit
