Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC)

7/16: A lone adult TUNDRA SWAN continues at Tachache Pool. At May’s Point
Pool area a female PROTHONOTARY WARBLER was seen and photographed.
Knox-Marsellus Marsh was very active with shorebirds this day. Seen from East
Road and Towpath Road were:
KILLDEER - 40
LESSER YELLOWLEGS - 415
GREATER YELLOWLEGS - 28
LEAST SANDPIPER - 595
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER - 39
SEMI-PALMATED SANDPIPER - 55
STILT SANDPIPER - 6
PECTORAL SANDPIPER - 5
SPOTTED SANDPIPER - 22
SOLITARY SANDPIPER - 5
At the VanDyne Spoor Road area LEAST BITTERN, ORCHARD ORIOLE, and a female
YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD were spotted. The YHB was seen flying into cattails and
could not be relocated.
7/18: A WILSON’S PHALAROPE and 2 SEMI-PALMATED PLOVERS were found in
Knox-Marsellus Marsh from East Road.
Oswego County

7/13: Another late flight over Derby Hill produced 5 raptor species
including 10 BALD EAGLES.
7/18: A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was found on Silk Road near the Oswego County
Airfield.
Onondaga County
------------
7/14: At the south end of Jamesville Resevoir the following shorebirds
were
seen. KILLDEER, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, SEMI-PALMATED SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER,and
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER.
7/18: 2 adult RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were seen near a residence in
Marcellus. RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS continue on Fenner Road near Baldwinsville
with the report of a fledging this week.
Oneida County
------------
7/14: At the Verona Marsh west of Verona on Rt. 31 the following
shorebirds
were seen. KILLDEER, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SEMI-PALMATED
SANDPIPER, and LEAST SANDPIPER. Also a MERLIN was seen flying by carrying prey.
