Greetings. This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of 
March 25 , 2013

Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC)
------------

     3/25: A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was seen on VanDyne Spoor Road before 
the railroad tracks.
     3/26: A (the) PINK-FOOTED GOOSE was seen from East Road as it landed with 
Canadas in Knox-Marsellus Marsh. It was also seen on 3/27 in Larue’s Lagoon on 
the Wildlife Drive where it was reported to have an injured leg. 
     Thanks to the previously mentioned rarities, 16 species of waterfowl were 
seen throughout the Complex this week including BLUE-WING TEAL and all three 
SWANS.
     3/27: A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen at Tschache Pool. It was refound on 3/31.
     3/30:  A GOLDEN EAGLE was seen from Mays Point Pool.
     3/31: A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen on the Wildlife Drive. A FOS 
FIELD SPARROW was found on Towpath Road.


Derby Hill
------------

     Things improved this week on Derby Hill with our first 1,000 plus day ( 
3/31 with 1528 hawks) and a grand total of 4,030 Hawks counted. The first  
BLACK VULTURE was seen on 3/26 and the first OSPREY was seen on 3/29. Other 
than rarities only Broad-wings remain to be counted but they are not due for a 
while yet.
     Other highlights were 2 ROSS’S GEESE ON 3/25, 35 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on 3/27 
and SANDHILL CRANES on 3/28 29 and 30.


Madison County
------------

     3/29: A FOS OSPREY was seen at the intersection of Tag and Gee Roads ( 
same date as Derby Hill) north of Chitenango.


Oswego County
------------

     3/29: A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen on Lilly Marsh Road in New Haven.
     4/1: A SANDHILL CRANE was seen flying over the Fulton area Wal-Mart.


Onondaga County
------------

     3/30 A FOS VIRGINIA RAIL was heard at the Dewitt Marsh on Fisher Road 
south of Bridge Street in Syracuse. YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS were also found . 6 
RED CROSSBILLS were found at Highland Forest Park on the main road just past 
the sawmill buildings.
