This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of April 15 , 2013 Highlights: ----------- BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON EURASIAN WIGEON BLACK SCOTER SANDHILL CRANE UPLAND SANDPIPER BOHEMIAN WAXWING BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER GRASSHOPPER SPARROW Migrants this week ------------ BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER CHIMNEY SWIFT EASTERN KINGBIRD BROWN THRASHER GREEN HERON SOLITARY SANDPIPER SPOTTED SANDPIPER CLIFF SWALLOW COMMON GALLINULE GRASSHOPPER SPARROW INDIGO BUNTING LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 4/18: TRUMPETER SWANS continue in the marshes on Railroad Road. Derby Hill ------------ At last a great week at Derby Hill (unless you could only go Saturday or Sunday). Monday through Friday there were over a thousand rapters each day with a grand total this week of 7,419. MERLIN and KESTREL were especially good this week. Oswego County ------------ 4/16: The first for the region UPLAND SANDPIPER was seen at the Oswego County Airport on Howard Road. An apparent mate showed up on 4/19. 4/17: An extremely rare for the region BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER was found at Sunset Bay Park on Lake Ontario. Unfortunately it turned out to be a one day wonder as efforts to relocate the nest day were fruitless. 4/20: An EURASIAN WIGEON was seen on the Lakewatch from Phillips Point on Oneida Lake. it was also seen on 4/21. Also seen on the 20th. were BLACK SCOTERS. Eventually during this week all three SCOTERS were seen migrating across the Lake. Other notable migrants seen this week were COMMON LOONS, BONAPARTE’S GULLS and LONG-TAILED DUCKS. Onondaga County ------------ 4/17: A FOS LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH was seen on Cedervale Road east of Marcellus. A SANDHILL CRANE was seen at Three Rivers WMA north of Baldwinsville. 4/18: Eight BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen om Lamson Road just west of Phoenix. 4/20: 39 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen at Green Lakes State Park. 3 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were found along the Creek Walk near Carousel Center in Syracuse. 4/22: A GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was found south of Potter Road in Three Rivers WMA north of Baldwinsville. A FOS INDIGO BUNTING was seen on the ESF campus of Syracuse University. The talk is free but parking is not but is available at the Irving Parking Garage on Irving Avenue.
