This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of June 24, 2013 Highlights: ----------- BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON SNOW GOOSE MERLIN SANDHILL CRANE RED-HEADED WOODPECKER CERULEAN WARBLER PROTHONOTARY WARBLER CLAY-COLORED SPARROW GRASSHOPPER SPARROW ORCHARD ORIOLE Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 6/28: A PROTHONOTARY WARBLER continues in the wooded area north of Armitage Road past the bridge. A family of SANDHILL CRANES was seen from Carncross Road. An adult BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON was seen on the south side of VanDyne Spoor Road in the marsh area. Cayuga County ------------ 6/25: 6 adult SNOW GEESE were seen at Cross Lake Marina. Onondaga County ------------ 6/27: A CERULEAN WARBLER continues to sing at Three Rivers WMAoff of 60 Road north of Baldwinsville. 6/29: An adult RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen again in a swamp west of Fenner Road north of Rt. 370. 6/30: A second year BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen along the Creekwalk near Hiawatha Boulevard inSyracuse. 7/1: An adult male ORCHARD ORIOLE was seen at a traditional site at the intersection of Kingdom and Breed Roads in the town of Van Buren. At least three GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS were heard at the Dewitt Landfill off of Fisher Road. Oneida County ------------ 6/25: 2 CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were again found at the Spring Farm Nature Sanctuary south of Clinton. 6/30: 2 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were found inthe Verona Beach State Park. Oswego County ------------ 6/26: 4 GRASSHOPER SPARROWS were again located at the grasslands on Main Street in Richland.
