This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of October 29, 2013 Highlights: ----------- WHITE-FACED IBIS GLOSSY IBIS ROSS’S GOOSE GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE ROSS’S GOOSE ROUGH-LEGGED HAEK GOLDEN EAGLE COMMON GALLINULE ICELAND GULL BLACK-LEGGED KITTYWAKE SANDHILL CRANE WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER ICELAND GULL RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD BOHEMIAN WAXWING Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 10/30: DUNLIN, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER and WILSON’S SNIPE were all seen at Colvin Marsh south of the MAC on Rt. 89. 11/2: Both the GLOSSY and WHITE-FACED IBIS were seen at the Visitor’s Center. WHITE-RUMPED and LEAST SANDPIPER were seen at Colvin Marsh. 3 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS and a ROSS’S GOOSE were seen at Knox-Marsellus Marsh. 11/4: Both the GLOSSY and WHITE-FACED IBIS were seen at Larue’s Lagoon along the Wildlife Drive. No mention of the American Pelicans was seen this week. Oneida County ------------- 11/3: A BLACK-LEGGED KITTYWAKE was seen being harassed by Bonaparte’s Gulls from the lighthouse at Verona Beach State Park. At the parking lot of the park an ICELAND GULL was spotted. Oswego County ------------ 11/3: Seven species of Raptor were noted at bishop Hill Road north of Pulaski. Highlights were 6 GOLDEN EAGLES and 4 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS. anearly BOHEMIAN WAXWING was seen in a flock of Ceder Waxwings at Derby Hill. Also noted were a SANDHILL CRANE and a RED-TTHROATED LOON. Onondaga County ------------ 10/30: This was the last positive report of the WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE at Van Buren Park in Baldwinsville. Goose numbers have increased so it still may be there. 11/4: TUNDRA SWANS were reported at Beaver Lake west of Baldwinsville.
