It wouldn't just be wayland support in motif. Even if we had wayland+motif working *now*, it would only help with applications. CDE is fundamentally a X11 window manager, and X11 window managers are a tiny part of the equivalent in wayland. Wayland, for... better or worse... has "compositors" in that space, which are basically window manager + most of what the X server did + I think some other stuff (input management, for instance). There are things like wlroots, a library for a lot of those parts, but you're still talking about something way bigger than what a X11 wm ever needed to do.
