Mister Lyons,
Regarding your stab at America, and not wanting to inflame the situation,
let me just defend my most beloved country, for which I would consider it
the highest possible honor to give my life, by saying that we have drawn
from the rest of the world the very best of the very best into what we
often refer to as a "melting pot" of different peoples. Different in skin
color, religion, language, customs, etc., but with one commonality: excellence.
This excellence appears to be naturally-born in these people. They have
often risked life and limb to come here against monstrous odds, just so
they could make a better way for themselves than they could anywhere else.
It takes alot for a man to move away from his native land for any reason;
risking death in some cases in order to EARN a better life for his family
is a very noble thing.
These people, God bless them, are willing to FIGHT and possibly die for
what they believe is their God-given right to freedom and a better way of
life. And once a fighter, always a fighter. It's ingrained in your soul
as a man.
When you get the best of the best in a room, the natural competitiveness of
champions will often result in some manner of competition to see who is
tops, and then we all hoist that winner high on our shoulders and admire
him or her most of all. We tell our children, "You see THAT, my son? That
is a winner, and a winner is a very, very good thing to be."
Yes, as a nation of individual champions we have a natural tendency to
fight and to win. This results in our national attitude which is often
mistaken by others as arrogance, pushiness, etc. We also complain until
things change for the better, or we get fed up (champions have a very low
tolerance for imperfection) and change them ourselves, often resulting in
innovations the rest of the world wants to copy.
With all due respect, sir, please do not think poorly of us for possessing
a national attitude of champions, or for swaggering from time to time.
When push comes to shove, we annihilate, and we will continue doing so
until we are shoved no longer. That is why we win. It is why the very
design of our national flag is resplendent with stripes of red,
representing the blood shed by these very men and women who fought and died
for all of our freedom again seemingly insurmountable odds. We honor this
very spirit which made them leap from their homes of comfort, take up arms,
march against those who would seek to possess them rather than respect
them, and painfully surrender their very lives in this pursuit.
