Yes, but according to the Talmud, there were all sorts of requirements, the
most unusual of which was:
There had to be two witnesses who literally caught him "in the act" and saw
the crime in progress.
It was so rare for someone to be put to death that if a Sanhedrin (High
court) put one man to death in 70 years, it was called a bloody Sanhedrin.
When I have a minute, I'll look into what these requirements were. But
