My wife and I have 2 very lage cats (15lbs each) and the best thing you can
do for them and your furniture is get a scratching post. I got mine at
petsmart for $40 I believe. That way they should claw that and not your
furniture. I would also get cat clippers so you can trim its claws. As for
cat-nip, they do love that. I've been told it's like a drug to them, kind of
like marijuana or something. We use it as a treat for them. I don't know but
our cats go crazy over it and start running around the house for like 30
minutes straight. Other than that, just get it some toys.

I have found that they are very lazy animals. Ours just sleep all
day.....then when you are ready for bed, they will walk all over you.
Nothing like a big 15lb furball walking on your back in the middle of the
night.
