Stephanie and All Cat Lovers!
Something to keep in mind when buying cat toys, especially if that toy is to
be used as a scratching post too, is texture. A cat distinguishes things by
its textures. If you want a cat to scratch on something give it a unique
texture like grass rope or carpet that is different that any carpet you may
have in your dwelling.
We have two Bengals and they are both rated as F3 so we have gone through
the ritual shredding of expensive furniture! The expensive toys don't seem
to be accepted as quickly as the home built scratching post. I ended up
building a scratching post from a landscaping timber wrapped in grass rope
with a small board at the top like a perch. All you have to do is sink the
timber into a bucket filled with cement to weight it down and give it a
little paint for ascetic value. You have satisfied two of the cat's main
craving. They like climbing and being higher than anyone else in the room.
I would welcome any direct correspondence about cats. You can reach me at

I hope this helps someone and can save a sofa's life too!

Buy very expensive things... The probability that the cat will want to use
something as a scratching post/play toy/etc. increases exponentially with
cost.
Those cheap toys will be virtually unnoticed when a $2000 sofa exists to
romp on.
