Gel,
I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.
Here's mine:
We're discussing things from the perspective of several different
countries. It should be obvious to all that generalizations that
include
all countries don't work. Americans, it would appear from our
discussions, could learn a lot from other cultures. While we like to
think of ourselves as superior, it's getting harder all the time to
defend such a position.
Whatever the case in other countries, here in America there has been a
marked change over the past thirty or forty years. Where there used to
be certain norms, things that you could count on during encounters
with
others, now all bets seem to be off. Where you used to be able to
count
on a certain level of decency and self-restraint (from most people),
now
you can't do it.
I have suspicions about the causes, and you're free to supply your
own.
But to me it's obvious that those of you who argue for turning the
other
cheek and walking away are on the right track. There are a lot of
frustrated people out there with either the size and strength or the
weaponry to win any argument they get into.
I would suggest that too many Americans have lost their notion of the
nobility of struggle and achievement and have come to believe that
winning is the only important value in life. Knowing that there are
people out there whose wires are so crossed that for them winning has
more value than your life, it's simply foolish to get into arguments
with people you don't know.
