Nintendo definitely thinks they know what you want, I think that stems from
the Japanese culture. Every time they make a new hardware announcement, it
reminds me of the Mr Sparkle Simpson's episode. They have their own way of
marketing which I remember from the pre-N64 "Fun Machine" days, which always
made me fell they were just lying to me for some reason. Their systems
always come out way, way later than they promise, and although the hardware
has been inferior in some ways, you can't argue with the sequels...er...new
games they produce. Even the cell-shaded Zelda, I'm not sure if you have
played it, but it's still Zelda, and it's still an incredible game. (If you
don't like it even after playing it, they are trying to provide a remedy:

Nintendo just doesn't play in the same realm as Sony and Microsoft. They
have their brands, and they are sticking to 'em. You're not going to get
the quantity, but you will get the quality...Metroid rocks serious ass,
Viewtiful Joe is a fun throwback, and the Star Wars Rogue Squadron games are
a ton of fun.
On another note, I'm a serious hardware junkie, so I've been on the Xbox
bandwagon since day zero. Sony serious disappointed me with the PS2
hardware (ugly pixels everywhere), and I never really gave a crap about
backwards compatibility. I have to admit, though, that I have popped in an
old PSX game or two in the last couple of weeks, and that the latest
generation of PS2 games have upped the graphics ante. But they still don't
compare to Halo, Ninja Gaiden (f-ing brilliant), Crimson Skies, PGR2, SC:
Pandora Tomorrow (inferior versions coming soon for PS2 and GC), Chronicles
of Riddick, etc.
>> Sony will probably bundle a next gen EyeToy with PS3
I don't think so...the EyeToy is just a toy, fun but still just a gimmick.
They have yet to provide any compelling mainstream gameplay mechanics other
than hit the gopher on the head with a mallet. I don't think we'll be
controlling the PS3 version of GTA with an EyeToy, but a few mini-games
where you get to literally bitch-slap your hoes might be fun (for those of
us inclined to do that sort of thing. Of course, I would be appalled at such
an idea.)
Microsoft won this round in my book, but my book doesn't count. It's the
mass market out there that determines the multi-multi-million $ sales, but I
think that the "normal" people are starting to realize the power of the box.
As far as the next generation goes, I think it's a clean slate. MS has
established themselves as a gaming powerhouse, Sony has GTA and Final
Fantasy, and Nintendo will be Nintendo. We are in for some serious kick-ass
gaming, graphics are going to be absolutely sick, and the production values
expectations are almost beyond comprehension now. Once again, hardware is
going to win it for me. Sony has high hopes for it Cell processors, I've
heard some ridiculous rumors for MS and the Big N's systems (3 GHz, crazy
amounts of memory, etc.) But the kicker will be who has the best forward
thinking. I'm talking about true high definition out of the box (most of
XBox's games are only 480p), and wireless connectivity for everything
(controllers, dvd remotes, networking, etc.) PVR and other media functions
will be a great reason for reason for my Dad to make a purchase also.
So let the best man/company win, and we'll get to reap the benefits.
Actually, they'll all probably get to reap the benefits, because I'll end up
buying all 3 systems anyways...

Is it just me - or do others get the feeling that Nintendo just doesn't "get
it?" They always seem to be saying stuff like this, and then they always
seem to backpeddle. They tried pushing all kinds of wierd hardware crap.
They tried pushing the cell shading Zelda. They said they were going to
focus on the "child" market even though gamers were growing up. I don't
know. I used to love Nintendo, and I only owned their consoles up to the
n64, but decided to switch to PS2 and XBox and feel no need to ever return.
I just get the feeling that Nintendo would rather tell me what I want to
play instead of asking me what I want to play... if that makes sense.

ps. Although I do hope that the rumours of a port of the Nintento Rogue
Squadron games to the XBOX are ture.
