they did not find such a relationship. Moreover the article itself
suggested that the weak positive correlation (which given the sample
size was so low as to be meaningless) was a function of reporting
bias. More importantly if there was an effect due to the induced
abortion, then the rates for breast cancer would be significantly
lower for spontaneous miscarriages. Such was not the case, there were
no significant differences. Given the sample size of over 6000, this
suggests that there really is no difference.
Additionally the relative risk ratio was so low, that the subjects in
the study probably had a better chance of developing breast cancer
from their annual mammogram x-rays. . Another point to consider is
that the study you cite is a case control study. This form of review
paper is statistically very weak, and frequently is very susceptible
to bias (in an experimental design sense) than other forms of
quantitative research.
Try a pub med search on them (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/). Of
the 121 articles only a minority found any such relationship. And of
those studies that found such a relationship, it was either extremely
weak (r < .10) to be essentially meaningless or bad study design
precluded any meaningful conclusions.
BTW I have developed some expertise in the area of meta-analysis. To
understand some of these studies, you may want to look at an article I
wrote on integrating scientific research across different studies,
http://www.lyonsmorris.com/MetaA/index.htm.
The point being is that the studies show that there is no real
relationship between a prior abortion and breast cancer.
