Question, why would the Bush administration give intelligence information to a media outlet if they did not want it published?

Intelligence is not handed out as "deep background" for "validity."

I'm glad that you have said that the Bush administration screwed up. They most certainly did. Pakistani intelligence released by the White House falls squarely in the category of news, especially when it comes from the White House. You can't blame the New York Times for reporting it. "...They shouldn't have..." applies to the Bush admin here. "...They shouldn't have..." leaked it!

and FWIW, saying,'this is off the record' doesn't count.
