There is very intense competition during those tournaments. On smaller sized lakes, its not uncommon for several people to be gunning for your "honey hole". A fast boat is essential for getting their first.

Another more obvious reason would be fishing time. The shorter amount of time it takes for you to get from your fishing spot to the weigh in, the longer you can stay at your hole, the better chance you have of catching fish.

My family owns a house on the Lake of the Ozarks and we just had this discussion the other day while witnessing several fishin boats smoking down the lake :)
