Well, that I would say is a big part of it, Bush stayed exactly where he has been for a while.
But the Democrats as group went with a candidate farther to the left than Gore. It seems to me, that if you want to counter a conservative president, the last thing you do is go farther to the left, you come closer to the middle so you can pick up more the middle ground people.
