That is a horrible analogy.

Cutting off arms doesn't prevent the spread of the disease and it may 
actually start a new infection.

Secondly, cutting of an arm is losing a vital function of the body. Most 
people don't even have a server installed on their computer that they 
attach to a residential network.  So closing those ports wouldn't even 
effect them.

Thirdly, these ports can be reopened without ill affects.  Trying to sow 
back an arm, no matter how successful is due to have ill affects.

I wish I had unlimited bandwidth too.  But I'm just trying to be fair to 
my fellow users.  I also encourage more security as long as it doesn't 
intrude too much.  I wish I could run a mail server and web server from 
home.  I don't though because 1) I don't know how to keep it secure and 
thus I know I would be a security risk to my network and 2) I don't want 
to hog the bandwidth.
