His position at having led the Palestinian people for the last 5 decades. They respect and love him. He's the symbolic leader of their struggle and it's my view that nothing will be accomplished by denigrating the symbolic leader of a people. For example:
"For 50 years, he's been leading our struggle," said Muhammad Abu Majdi, 55, who runs a stationery shop in the Kalandia refugee camp here. He called the death "our irreplaceable loss." But, he continued: "May God have mercy on him. We hope that this will be a new beginning, of a new era of peace." This is the exact sentiment that the US can capitalize on. I think Sec Powell did a good job: "We know that, in the eyes of the Palestinian people, Arafat embodied their hopes and dreams for the achievement of an independent Palestinian state," Secretary of State Colin L. Powell said.
