So, as I wrote earlier today, I bought the retail version of Half-life 2. I
installed it last night at around 2am after getting my new computer put
together and updated. Needless to say, I only got to wow at about 5 minutes
of graphics, I didn't have any speakers hooked up and I was using a crappy
old mouse that stuttered. I also installed steam on my computer here at
work this morning and it spent all day downloading the game and then I
decided to call all of my co-workers in for a little demonstration...but an
error reared it's ugly head saying "No disc in drive".

What the frick is the reason for steam then?! I still need to haul my
archaic DVD around with me everywhere I want to play the game?

I take it, those of you that bought directly from valve don't have to worry
about this and can play it on any machine you want? I think Valve's and VU
really bungled this launch that I was very fired up for...I hate it when
companies with so much potential let you down. Steam is the future of all
entertainment at some level, and I had hopes the minds behind the Source
engine could handle it, I guess I figured wrong.

Moral of the story: Don't buy the retail versions.

[Cue the sad music]

If I can save just one of you from making the same mistakes I did...
