Its not worthless it actually overwrote my steam version but after
uninstalled i still had access to hl2 without the cd
but when i wanted to play hl: source i needed the cd.

I dont mind putting in the cd for hl but for hl2 it doesnt matter.

i was not taking any chances in making sure i got a copy of the game
LOL. I preordered it long before i found out how steam really worked
but i'm not upset about it either way.
