Doom3 didn't scare me so much as annoy. ;^) It was hard from the get-go, but mostly because of the controls and the damn flashlight. I give them credit for trying something like that, but the simple fact was the game was just TOO dark to move without the flashlight in most areas and equipping the light left you a sitting duck. Add to that the fact that the enemies threw you around and obscured your vision and it was just a very frustrating experience. Doom3 also seemed very predictable to me. Very quickly (I didn't finish it either) you saw: "when I step through that doorway I bet that stairway's coming down." Or "that grate will collapse." It was balanced, it seemed to me, to be a series of difficult encounters followed by just enough health to get to the next difficult encounter: you get your ass kick almost die, get some health then the process continued. Also Doom3 (I felt) was just very monotonous - dark room after dark hallway after dark room. Even before the accident everything was dark. Their was just very little contrast. HL2, on the other hand, spooked me more because of the contrast: you're running blissfully along in nice, bright daylight then have to duck into a dark, unknown sewer. Is what forced you into the sewer better or worse than what could be lurking in the sewer? The contrast is also apparent in the story. It's scarier (to me at least) to be happily playing catch with Dog and Alyx and THEN wind up in Ravenholm. Doom3 starts off depressing and ominous and never seems to let up - that's good in some ways, but I think it makes for an overall less emotionally charged (less scary) game. I really don't think there's any contest... Doom3 just didn't snag my attention at all. I've only been able to stop playing HL2 through threats of force and joblessness. ;^) Jim Davis ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| Special thanks to the CF Community Suite Gold Sponsor - CFHosting.net http://www.cfhosting.net Message: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=i:5:137411 Archives: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/threads.cfm/5 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/lists.cfm/link=s:5 Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=11502.10531.5 Donations & Support: http://www.houseoffusion.com/tiny.cfm/54
