At least so far, except for that one window at the security station, there's very little need to pile things up to move forward. (There are, later, several "see saw" puzzels which require you to add or remove balast to affect a levered plane... but they're all pretty obvious.) In the railyard you want to look for open doors and use the crowbar to smash through obstacles like crates and such. Almost all of the "gotcha" areas are for missing doors through the trains to the other side.
