Definitely ornamental. It is planted right up close to the house, and I have never seen this type of tree (growing wildly) in the New England area before that I know of.
Let's see, to answer your questions: I raked all the leaves when I moved in, and don't remember what they looked like. I will look for some tonight when I get home and photograph them for tomorrow. Although, with the snow this might be a lost cause. Damn this snow/ice/sleet/rain/frogs! It is about 7-8 feet tall, trunk is about 6-8" diameter canopy is rather small, I'd say about 5 feet diameter. The canopy is what is really strange. It is cypress-like in that the branches all originate at the top, and they al go up and out, eventually drooping back down. This is hard to explain, but with a picture, you'd see what I mean. I'll get that tomorrow. Branches don't really grow out of the side of the tree, as I just mentioned, they grow out of the top. Kind of like Jeff's new hair, if you can picture what I mean. The bark is a light brownish color, like and the bark is semi-smooth. Not as smooth as a birch, but almost. Can't see the roots, from what I remember. I'll look and photo that too. The house was built in 1948, but the yard looks like it was recently (last 5 years maybe) reworked. The house was vacant for a good number of years, so I am pretty sure by the size and the look of the tree that it is not original to 1948.
