The New England Skeptical Society hosted a great three hour talk with James Randi (www.randi.org, for those that don't know). The talk was held in a small auditorium at Tufts.
This was the first time I've been able to see Randi in person (I've tried before when he was at MIT but they got four times more people than they expected). I think it's due to the break being on, but although we were at a school the crowd was generally older and pretty small (about 100 people). If you ever get the chance to see him do - he's an incredibly approachable and engaging speaker. He showed several clips of his appearances on the tonight show and capped them with a very moving story about his friend Johnny Carson. He did several tricks (and told us how to do all but one), discussed "Psychic Surgery" and Homeopathy in some depth. Most of the talk concerned how smart people can be fooled (and often are more unwillingly to admit it). He ended with a heartfelt story about how he was able to visit the lunar materials lab and hold actual moon rocks. This was especially touching as the friend that went with me was an engineer on the Apollo project. (He has a keepsake medallion that was given to all members of the project that, he was told, has lunar material embedded in it. He's not let me touch it. ;^) ) Just a very enjoyable evening all around.
