That diesel Jetta produces 5x the amount of soot as a normal gasoline
engine. The battery on a Prius is 100 pounds, not 1000. It's also less
toxic than a normal lead acid battery. And burning diesel just smells
gross.

Pushing hybrids is a very smart move. As is the requirement for making
diesel emissions conform to those of normal gas cars (though that is
going to take about a decade). There are some really interesting
experiments with combining the diesel and hybrid tech.

The point isn't which tech is better. The real issue is reducing
overall dependence on fossil fuels. There are some pretty smart
people, like the CEO of Chevron/Texaco, betting on us having reached
peak oil. It's in their interests to make as much profit from their
oil investments as possible while it lasts and we're inevitably going
to be the ones footing the bill.
