I think it's a genuine disorder that is also sometimes a label of convenience for schools. I do think my son has it, though, not saying he doesn't. It's a rather mild conduct disorder, rather frustrating to deal with, though I've had some success with a cognitive approach. In my son's case I believe it to be due to a build-up of frustration with teachers telling him he is stupid/lazy/ a pain because his handwriting does not meet their specifications. That's enough for an overview. I can go deeper if people are really interested. He is also ADHD-diagnosed, no question at all that this diagnosis is accurate.
