Some of us hold the US to a higher standard, because of its self-trumpeted ideals. At some point the morality of An Eye for an Eye has to end. In other words the Geneva Conventions (of which the US is a guarentor power) is designed to protect combatants and non-combatants regardless of what one side is doing.
