Its just not the agent who is put in danger, its her covert contacts.
When in Africa with her husband, during his assignments in central
Africa, apparently her cover was as a business development officer for
an American company. As such she met with a number of people, some for
cover purposes, most however for activities related to her CIA
assignments. Many countries do track contacts foreigners have with the
locals. Suddenly all these people are in danger.

So it doesn't matter whether she was in the field when Rove outed her,
the network of contacts she built up in Gabon and Niger were placed in
considerable danger.
