Yea, I think any dog would be miserable by itself all day long.  Do 
either of you have the ability to take him/her to work?

I take mine to work every day with me, but if I ever move on to another 
job where she'd have to stay at home for 8-10 hrs, I'd definitely get 
her a companion.  Of course, that is a LOT of work, especially if you 
get them both as puppies....
